7 Years, 23 Mistakes, $9,800: Why I Now Ask What's Not Included Before Buying Auto Parts

The most expensive auto part isn't the one that fails. It's the one that has to be fitted twice. What bothered me most wasn't the extra cost. Sellers who list those details honestly are easier to trust, even when their part isn't the cheapest one on the page.

Mistake 3: Piston rings and the missing overbore spec

The piston rings mistake was quieter but just as avoidable. We were rebuilding an older engine, and the machine shop had bored the cylinders 0.030 inch oversize. I ordered piston rings without double-checking the bore spec on the work order. The listing gave me a choice between standard and oversize, and I picked the standard set because it was the default and the price was slightly lower.

My experience, though, is limited to about two hundred parts orders a year at an independent repair shop, mostly for commuter cars and light trucks. If you're restoring a classic car, building a race engine, or managing a heavy-duty fleet, your risk calculation will be different. Labor rates, downtime costs, and quality expectations are not the same across every segment.

The pattern from my spreadsheet holds in most cases, however: the least trustworthy quote isn't the highest one or the lowest one. It's the one that doesn't tell you what's missing. A supplier who lists exactly what's included, what's not included, and what the part is for will often look more expensive at first glance. But I've rarely had to install that supplier's parts twice.

So before you ask what a part costs, ask what it includes. If the seller can't answer that clearly, the price you're looking at isn't the final price—it's just the part you'll pay for again.
