Gates 22165 Premium Molded Coolant Hose, Drive Belts & More: 7 Questions From a Quality Inspector

I’m a quality manager at Gates. I review production lots before they ship to OEMs and aftermarket distributors—coolant hoses, drive belts, and similar components. I also spend a fair amount of time looking at field failures. This is not a sales page. It’s a list of the questions I’d answer honestly if you were standing at my desk.

1. What is the Gates 22165 premium molded coolant hose?

The 22165 is a molded coolant hose—or rather, a pre-formed hose with the bends already built in. It’s not a straight length of heater hose cut from a roll. The “premium” part is not just marketing; it means the tube is formulated for coolant resistance and the cover is tested for heat and abrasion. According to the Gates product data sheet (gates.com, accessed March 2025), this hose is built to meet or exceed SAE J20 specifications. If you’re replacing a curved hose under the hood, the 22165 is the exact shape for that application—not a universal approximation.

2. Does a molded hose really fit better than a universal hose?

In many cases, yes. When I first started in quality, I assumed a hose was a hose. Then I saw a field return where a universal heater hose had kinked right at a water pump neck, blocked the coolant flow, and caused an overheating complaint. A molded hose keeps the curve radius open. On the 22165, the bends are set into the rubber, so you don’t have to force it into position. That also keeps it away from pulleys, brackets, and hot exhaust surfaces. If you cut both hoses lengthwise, you’ll see the difference: the molded one keeps a consistent wall thickness even on the bend. The universal hose often thins out where it was stretched.

3. How do Gates Drive Belts compare to the belt that came off my car?

For most vehicles, Gates replacement belts are built to the same dimensional and material specifications as the OE belt. We check rib height, cord tension, and edge construction on every production lot. That’s not a claim that OE is always worse. It means the replacement part should perform the same way, with consistent tolerances. But the belt usually isn’t the real problem. If you replace a Gates drive belt and it still squeals, check the tensioner, pulley alignment, and belt length. A mismatched belt—too long or too short—causes more failures than the belt material itself.

4. Why does my Honeywell thermostat no display?

This one isn’t a Gates product, but it comes up often enough that I’ve included it. A Honeywell thermostat with a blank display is usually a battery problem. If the screen is dead and the batteries look fine, check the breaker, the furnace switch, and the low-voltage fuse. On many Honeywell models, the transformer sends 24V AC to the thermostat through the R and C wires. If you have a C-wire, use a multimeter to check for 24V between R and C. If you don’t have 24V, the issue is the transformer or the wiring, not the thermostat. I once spent 20 minutes troubleshooting a “dead” thermostat only to find the HVAC disconnect switch was off. It happens.

5. What are the early signs of a cracked Volvo D13 exhaust manifold?

A cracked Volvo D13 exhaust manifold usually shows up as a ticking or puffing noise on cold start, a diesel smell under the cab, and sometimes soot on the manifold joint. You may also notice a slight loss of engine braking power. Before you replace the manifold, check the gasket. In my experience, a leaking gasket is more common than a cracked manifold. If the manifold is cracked, look at why: high exhaust temperatures from injector issues or a DPF regeneration problem can cause thermal cycling, and no gasket will fix that. Replace the root cause, or you’ll do the job twice.

6. Oxygen sensor cost: What should I expect?

Oxygen sensor cost depends on whether it’s an upstream sensor (before the catalytic converter) or downstream (after it). Based on parts-chain listings from AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, and RockAuto in March 2025, the typical range is $30 to $150 for the part. Upstream wideband sensors usually run higher. A shop’s labor is $80 to $200 on top if you don’t do it yourself. That $30 universal sensor with the bare wire ends might save money up front, but I’d rather have the exact OE connector. Poor connector fit can cause voltage drops, and a bad ground signal will set a code even if the sensor itself is fine.

7. Should I just buy the cheapest oxygen sensor?

No. That’s not me defending high prices—I’m defending the total cost. A $35 sensor that fails in eight months means you pay for diagnosis and labor again. Now you’re at $200+ for a part that should have cost $80. When I evaluate a purchase, I look at what happens if the part fails. If the sensor is easy to reach and you’re doing the job yourself, the risk is lower. But if it’s behind an engine mount or on a cold northern road in January, buy the brand the OEM uses and check the connector before you close the hood. In that case, the aftermarket manufacturer might be NTK, Denso, or Bosch—not Gates.
