A print vendor once told me that the value of a guaranteed turnaround isn’t speed—it’s certainty. That’s true for specs too. The value of a tight tolerance isn’t strictness for its own sake. It’s knowing that the part will do what it’s supposed to do.
This isn’t like choosing the best smart thermostat for Google Home. If a thermostat is buggy, you reboot it and lose twenty minutes of comfort. If a coolant hose fails at a clamp, you get a puddle under the engine. A turbocharger hose that delaminates can leave someone stranded. The stakes are different. The decision process should be different.
Communication matters too. I said “must meet the drawing.” The supplier heard “try your best.” Result: a rejected batch, two weeks of delay, and a reshipment at their cost. We were using the same words but meaning different things—discovered this when the hoses were already on the pallet.
Honestly, I’m not sure why some suppliers skim the spec on parts like this. My best guess is they assume the inspection will be visual, or that the buyer won’t have a quality department behind them. It works until it meets a company like ours.
What I’d Do Differently
We rejected the 8,000 hoses. The supplier redid them at their own cost.
