Gates Auto Parts: A Buyer's Guide to Coolant Hoses, Bearings, and More
There's no one right answer. Here's how to decide.
When I first started managing parts ordering for our service fleet—about 400 vehicles across three locations—I assumed the right way to buy was simple: find the cheapest part that fits, and move on. It never is that simple.
Five years later, after chasing bad parts, fighting with invoice codes, and learning the hard way about hidden costs, I've realized there are really three different scenarios when it comes to buying gates, gates auto parts, and related components. What works for one situation is a disaster for another.
Here's how I break it down.
Scenario A: The 'I Need It to Run for 5 More Years' Build
When OE quality matters most
Some repairs are on vehicles you plan to keep long-term. For our fleet, these are the vehicles we've already decided to run until 2028-2030. In these cases, the cost of a cheap part is measured in downtime and repeat labor—not just the part price.
What we do:
- For coolant systems: we always use the gates 22165 premium molded coolant hose or its equivalent for specific applications. It's not the cheapest hose on the shelf. But in my experience—and I've learned this twice with aftermarket hoses that cracked within 18 months—a $35 hose that fails costs you $350 in labor and coolant replacement.
- For engine internals: specifically for thrust bearing in engine replacements, we stick with OEM or premium brands. That bearing takes axial load from the crankshaft. A cheap bearing can fail in under 50,000 miles. The replacement cost (if you catch it early) is still a full engine teardown.
My rule: if the labor to replace the part is more than three times the part cost, buy the best part you can source.
Scenario B: The 'I Need to Get It Back on the Road Today' Repair
When availability beats brand loyalty
Sometimes you have a vehicle down, a driver waiting, and a deadline. In this case, the perfect part doesn't exist—you need something that works.
What we do:
- For car condenser vs radiator questions: if your AC system needs a condenser (the part that cools refrigerant) and a radiator (the part that cools engine coolant), they are different parts. But if you're in a hurry, make sure the condenser's fins match the OEM orientation. I've seen mismatched condensers cause airflow restrictions. We keep a few common Gates condensers in stock for our fleet (thankfully).
- For code-related issues: sometimes you get a fuel injector code. The code might say "cylinder 3 injector circuit". You replace the injector, clear the code, and it comes back. Wasted $120 on the wrong diagnosis. Pro tip: before you buy any gates auto parts for a code, verify the wiring and connector first. A $15 wiring repair beats a $200 injector that wasn't the problem.
Caveat (learned the hard way): If the vehicle will be back in your shop within 6 months for other work, don't cheap out just to get it out the door. Scenario C: The 'I'm Building a Maintenance Stock' Buy
When price per unit matters—but not blindly
For parts you know you'll use regularly (hoses, belts, gaskets), bulk buying can save money. But here's the trap: don't buy the cheapest version of a part you hate installing.
I ordered 50 generic coolant hoses once. They fit—barely. Every one took twice as long to install as a Gates hose. That's 50 extra labor hours across the year. At $85/hour shop rate, that's $4,250 in wasted labor to save $200 on parts. Value over price, every time.
What we do:
- For high-turnover items like coolant hoses: we buy Gates 22165 in quantity when it's on promo. We also keep a few thrust bearing in engine kits for common engine families (4.0L, 5.7L, 6.2L). The savings on bulk buys aren't huge—maybe 10-15%—but the consistency in quality is worth more than the discount.
- For radiator and condenser inventory: I track car condenser vs radiator failures across our fleet. Right now, we replace 3 radiators for every 1 condenser. So I stock 3 radiators for every condenser. Simple math, but it means I almost never have to rush-ship a radiator.
How to tell which scenario you're in
The easiest way? Ask yourself one question: "If this part fails in 12 months, am I okay with the cost of fixing it again?"
- If the answer is no: you're in Scenario A. Buy OE quality. Buy Gates. Buy the premium option.
- If the answer is yes, but you have a deadline: you're in Scenario B. Get it running, but plan to revisit the repair later if needed.
- If you're buying to stock: you're in Scenario C. Optimize for total cost—labor + part + future risk, not just part price.
One more thing: This approach isn't perfect. I've had Scenario A purchases that sat on the shelf too long (inventory carrying costs are real). And I've had Scenario B repairs that held up just fine for years. But in my experience, applying the right mindset to each buy saves more than any "one-size-fits-all" policy ever could.
