Two Mistakes I Still Kick Myself For

Year, make, and model get you most of the way there. The VIN gets you all the way. Mid-year production changes, engine codes, and emissions packages mean the same truck can use different parts depending on when it was built.

Step 3: Measure Physical Parts Before You Trust Nominal Sizes
Nominal sizes lie. A drive shaft loop listed as "universal" might not line up with the bolt pattern on your vehicle—at least, that's been my experience with every universal loop I've ordered. An air filter listed as 10x14x1 might actually measure 9.75 × 13.75 × 0.98 inches. Close enough for some engines. But if that filter is sealing the intake, a gap around the edge lets unfiltered dust straight into the cylinders.
Before I order a drive shaft loop, I measure the mounting plate width and bolt spacing on the vehicle. Before I order the 10x14x1 air filter, I look at the OE filter's printed dimensions if it's still in the housing. Measure the old part. Two minutes, and it prevents a surprising number of medium-sized headaches.
Step 4: Buy From a Supplier Who Can Prove What They're Selling
This is the mistake I most regret. In 2023, I found a great price on a batch of Gates thermostats from a new supplier—about 18% below our regular vendor. Thought I was the hero of the month. Then the invoice came in. Well, "invoice" is generous. It was a handwritten receipt. Finance rejected the expense report, and I ate roughly $1,200 out of the department budget. - Part number on the part itself, not just the box. I've seen labels that disagree with the stamping on the part. Open the box.
- Sealing surfaces. Molded hoses, thermostat housings, anything with a gasket surface can get damaged in transit. A dented flange doesn't heal.
- Lot numbers. If it's blank or unreadable, flag it before it goes into inventory.
- Quantity. I've received 7 of a 10-piece order more times than I care to count.

Step 6: How to Install an Ignition Coil Without Guessing
If you're installing an ignition coil, the same verification principle applies at the workbench. The two most common failures I've seen: wrong connector keying and an over-torqued mounting bolt. Here's the install checklist I give our shop:
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal first.
- Photograph the coil wire routing before you unplug anything. Future-you will forget which connector goes where.
- Remove the old coil and its mounting bolt. Compare the new coil against the old one side by side—check connector shape, pin layout, and bracket position.
- Clean the mounting surface. A small amount of debris under a coil can change its seating.
- Tighten the mounting bolt to spec. "Hand tight plus a grunt" isn't a torque value.
- Reconnect the battery, start the engine, then move to Step 7.
That side-by-side comparison has caught two mismatched coils for me—parts that looked right from above but had a different connector key once you held them against the old part. Both times, the difference was only visible with the two parts in hand.
Step 7: Verify After Installation—Codes, Torque, and Records
You turned the key, the engine started, you're done. Not so fast. Three checks before you close the hood:
- Scan for codes with a $30 OBD-II scanner. Modern vehicles will often set a soft code even if the check engine light hasn't come on yet.
- Re-check torque after the first heat cycle. For a drive shaft loop or any component that can vibrate, bolts settle after the first 100 miles. Five-minute job.
- Log the part number and date in the maintenance record while the box is still in front of you. You will not remember three months from now which coil went into which vehicle.
If you can't prove it's right, you haven't verified it. That's my rule, and I've learned it the expensive way.
Two Mistakes I Still Kick Myself For
First: I told a supplier "as soon as possible," meaning within three days. They heard "whenever convenient" and shipped two weeks later. Same words, two different meanings. I'd already paid for expedited shipping from another vendor to cover the gap. Now I use specific dates, in writing, and I confirm the supplier's acknowledgment.
Second: I didn't verify a turbocharger hose kit fitment until the mechanic had the old hoses off. If I'd checked the VIN against the application guide before anyone got their hands dirty, we'd have saved $420 in diagnostic and reassembly labor that was completely avoidable.
