If you're sourcing automotive metal stamping parts and automotive forging parts separately, you're probably paying more than you need to—and taking on more risk than you realize. In my experience auditing suppliers across the supply chain, the single biggest variable in total cost and quality consistency isn't the part price itself. It's whether your supplier can handle multiple processes under one roof.

From the outside, splitting your stamping automotive work from your forging and automotive aluminum extrusions makes sense. You get competitive bids for each process. You pick the cheapest for each. You assume you're optimizing.
The reality is different. What you don't see is the hidden coordination cost, the tolerance stack-up between parts from different suppliers, and the finger-pointing when something doesn't fit.
People assume the lowest total comes from cherry-picking vendors. What they don't see is that a supplier handling automotive industry stamping plus forging and extrusion has already absorbed those coordination costs internally. They've already solved the fitment issues. That shows up in fewer rejects, fewer delays, and fewer expensive redo cycles.
What Four Years of Audits Taught Me About Supplier Risk

I have mixed feelings about the "specialist vs. generalist" debate. On one hand, a specialist stamping house might have deeper expertise in that single process. Why does this matter? Because the cost of a quality issue in automotive isn't just the redo. It's the delayed vehicle launch. It's the expedite fees for replacement parts. It's the hours of engineering time debugging a tolerance stack that shouldn't exist.
Is a single supplier always cheaper? No. But the risk profile is often better, especially when you factor in the cost of quality issues.
What a Multi-Process Supplier Actually Brings
When I audit a facility like Gates that handles progressive die stamping, CNC machining, forging, and aluminum extrusions in-house, I look for three things:
- Process handoff control: How do they ensure a stamped part's datum references match the machined features on the same assembly? The answer is usually a single engineering team that owns both processes.
- In-house die & mold design: This is the biggest quality leverage point. If the die designer talks directly to the stamping production team and the CNC team, tolerance issues get resolved before steel is cut.
- Consistent quality culture: One set of quality standards across processes. No finger-pointing.
In my opinion, the value of these three things easily justifies any per-part price premium you might see from a multi-process supplier. The question isn't whether the part price is lower. It's whether your total landed cost—including risk—is lower.
When This Doesn't Apply: The Boundary Conditions
To be fair, multi-process suppliers aren't a silver bullet. Here's where they may not be the best fit:
- Extreme high volume, simple parts: If you need 50 million simple stampings a year, a specialist with dedicated high-speed lines will likely beat a generalist on cost.
- Commodity aluminum extrusions: Standard extrusions bought by the ton from a mill—no need for a multi-process supplier.
- When you need genuine process innovation: If you need a breakthrough in stamping depth or forging complexity, a specialist might have deeper specific knowledge.
But for the vast middle ground—assemblies that combine stamping with CNC work, forging, or extrusions—the multi-process supplier is often the smarter choice. Period.
From my perspective, the industry is moving this way anyway. OEMs are consolidating their supply base precisely to reduce coordination risk. If your supplier already has multiple processes in-house, you're already ahead of that curve.
One last thing: if you're considering a multi-process supplier, ask about their in-house die design capability. Not all multi-process suppliers are created equal. The ones that design and build their own dies tend to have better integration than those who outsource tooling. That's been my experience, anyway.
